Wild Coast Guide

The Wild Coast is a really great destination. Protected for years by limited road access, this area offers a combination of rural tranquillity, traditional African lifestyles and architecture, almost unbelievable scenery and fascinating flora and fauna with the opportunity to have a great beach holiday.

Craggy, rocky and untamed, the Wild Coast is the pearl in the crown of the Eastern Cape with countless natural attractions and a rich cultural heritage. Kilometre after kilometre of unspoiled coastline, forest and open spaces where you can enjoy sandy beaches, fishing, horse riding, birding, hiking, famous shipwrecks and strandloper caves.

Kei Mouth

Safe and sandy beaches contribute to making Kei Mouth a popular holiday destination, with beaches and surf conditions to suit everyone. Wacky Point on the right of the main beach is ideal for surfers. For hikers the "Strandloper Trail" is a coastal hiking trail leading from Kei Mouth up to East London.

Port St Johns

The setting of Port St Johns is possibly the most dramatic in the country and the drive from Umtata to Port St Johns is one of the best journeys on the Wild Coast. The Umzimvubu River cuts a huge gorge right to the sea where it then squeezes between the river’s edge and the red stone cliffs of the gorge. Twin mountains, the Thesiger and Sullivan, lie on either side of the river mouth like bastions and are regarded as the gates of Port St Johns
